The biggest difference between an electric blanket and an electric mattress pad is that the pad goes on top of the mattress and you lie down on top of the pad, where with an electric blanket you are under the blanket.

An electric mattress pad keeps you much warmer than a traditional electric blanket because the heat is continually rising off your body unlike an electric mattress pad where the heat is always rising though you. That makes the pad more cost efficient because it takes less electricity to warm you and the bed.

The Electric Mattress Pad is also Therapeutic

The electric mattress pad is a great way to relax those sore muscles, not just in the lower back but the upper back, legs, and arms. In fact, the whole body will benefit whether it’s sore or not.  A mattress pad will also temporarily relieve the pains caused from arthritis.
Lying on top of the mattress pad for about twenty minutes a day is an excellent way to get relief. The normal therapeutic temperature is any where around 400 degrees Celsius or 1040 degrees Fahrenheit.

When you apply heat from the top with an electric blanket or some other source, almost 90% of that heat is lost because heat travels up. However, with an electric mattress pad the heat is still moving up but you are on top of the heat and those aching back muscles and arthritis pains are absorbing almost all the therapeutic heat. Also, when heated from the bottom up with an electric mattress pad, the mattress will retain that heat more cost efficiently than with an electric blanket.

Other Benefits

There are some other benefits of an electric mattress pad. For example, if you’re an active sleeper, (move around a lot in your sleep) in the winter time on those cold nights you will find that lying on an electric mattress pad is more comfortable than an electric blanket because you don’t have to deal with the cords getting wrapped up around your feet. You don’t have to deal with those lumpy electric blankets and a mattress pad also ads comfort to your mattress.

Also in the winter it only takes a slight breeze to blow the warm air away from you, but with an electric mattress pad warming from the mattress up, it’s impossible for you not to benefit from its warmth.
